More Lake Mburo National Park

Mburo has instant likeability and there are plenty of good reasons for its popularity. For a start, it’s a straightforward drive from Kampala via a well paved/tarmacked road. Once there, it’s easily navigable and there’s a great choice of accommodation from cozy budget camps to world class 5 star safari lodges in infinity pools.

Lying at 1220m - 1828m above sea level in Western Uganda, Mburo is a savannah destination with 15 major lakes that are inter connected by papyrus jungles. Beyond hosting 350 bird species, it boasts of several herbivores with the pysic of antelopes; including impala, oribi,  eland, Defassa waterbuck, topi and reedbuck. The parks biggest browsers are buffaloes, zebras and rothschild giraffes. Thanks to the abundance of hyenas that devour corpses of dead animals, the park though wild is ever clean.

What's more, animals are everywhere and there’s a variety of landscapes where bush walks and horseback riding is unforgettable. You can drive around the park and you should pick up a fair amount of game.

If you prefer bushwalks, a visit to the salt lick almost guarantees a good stream of animals coming past on every given day.

The sight of clear blue skies is formidable even in the dry seasons. It is such a fascinating scene when sunset turns to gold and the air is filled with a cloud of dust in which solemn processions of marching giraffes appear as ghostly silhouettes.

Highlights for most nature lovers is exploring the shores of the lake from aboard a boat and watching how different prey co-exist in a complex eco-system. In the marshes, hundreds of yawning crocodiles patiently wait to strike at unsuspecting antelopes. Predator numbers are low in Mburo but they are there so look hard. That way, you might see a leopard that is escorting her young from a thicket to drink in a stream.

Accommodation

There are some nice accommodations in Lake Mburo National Par. We like Rwakobo Rock for medium budget and Mihingo Lodge for High Budget.

Rwakobo Rock is a very nice lodge, built on rocks, with a splendid view over the park. The lodge has a nice swimming pool and is family friendly.

Mihingo Lodge is very luxurious, with large cottages and a splendid view. Mihingo Lodge has an infinity swimming pool.
